I voted for Kerry in 2004 (my first time being old enough to vote) as part of the anybody-but-bush campaign. I learned almost immediately afterwards that he (like his opponent Bush) is a member of skull and bones and I had been duped (funny how this fact never came up while I was engulfed in mainst... I love reading, but also find my attention span lacking. I used to read 2-3 a week. I read maybe 2-3 a month now. But i think its because therr are so many shiny new things now ... social media, YouTube, Apps, Podcasts ... can all get oberwhelming with so much out there. Back to books, I am going to... View More
I try to get stuff done most days, buy books just suck me in... With the amount of information available to me, i have trouble getting anything done!
I find that, in my experience, there is a difference between the three "modes"' of book. Physical book being prone to drawing me in to a single sentence or part of a sentence. The portion becoming an avenue for imagination or appreciation all its own. Electronic books have some of that quality, but ... View More
Do Psychedelic Worlds Really Exist?
People often report that their experiences on psychedelics feel ‘more real than real’. But are they?
In this thought experiment we can not grasp the unreality of our only known existence without some extraordinary event, such as the portal appearing. We would have to be taken from the only reality we know to this other place to determine that such a realm even exists.
Like the hypothetical person raised in the Holodeck we can not believe that any other reality exists unless we are faced with a startling display of evidence. Others, raised as we had been, would never understand what we witnessed. We would be considered weird or insane for trying to explain what we... View More
How, then, to explain to others who live in our own present "reality" any other experience we might have? Our hypothetical Holodeck resident might come to question the reality of the world outside of the Holodeck as much as he questions the world inside of it.
These mathematicians think the universe may be conscious
The creators of Integrated Information Theory, the bizarre model that suggests the universe could be consciousness, are doubling down on the idea.
Everyone on this planet needs to take the probable and irreversible consequences of artificial intelligence seriously. This is no longer a science fiction fantasy to laugh off, but an inevitability. O... View More
Can we build AI without losing control over it? | Sam Harris
59 views
Scared of superintelligent AI? You should be, says neuroscientist and philosopher Sam Harris -- and not just in some theoretical way. We're going to build superhuman machines, says Harris, but we haven't yet grappled with the problems associated with creating something that may treat us the way we treat ants.

Not sure if I can ever really take Sam Harris as serious. He has no concept of consciousness in my book, and how an AI system would work if it became "self aware".
I disagree with Sam Harris on a hell of a lot, but I think what he mentions here is undeniable. Artificial intelligence may never have consciousness, but the threat of ai advancing in intelligence beyond our control is still important to consider I think. That isn't to say this digital intelligence ... View More
Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to be gained. AI could send us hundreds or thousands of years into the future with advances, but we can't so quickly give it the benefit of the doubt and ignore what's at stake.
