August of 1979 saw the ship alongside in Darwin and being visited by Commodore M Hudson and a Parliamentary Committee in regards to the siting of the proposed new Patrol Boat Base in Darwin. Patrol with the assistance of a Western Australian Fisheries Inspector attacks by F-111 Mirage! Where the ship put into Cairns for repairs before proceeding on to Samurai in company Archer! April saw Adroit in the Browse Island, Ashmore Reef area where she located another Vietnamese refugee boat to the south-west of Bathurst Island. The ship arrived at Cairns and was slipped on 19 August for a refit which lasted until 17 October at which time Lieutenant CJ Ellis, RAN assumed command. From June 1973 until 5 May 1974 Adroit remained at HMAS Moreton before undertaking fishery patrols around the Gladstone, Fraser Island, Bundaberg, Percy Islands and Mackay areas. Adroit then remained in Darwin as 'stand by vessel' for the Christmas New Year period. In her capacity as a training vessel Adroit regularly participated in exercises in the Western Australian Exercise Area during which time she operated routinely with both major and minor units of the RAN and RANR. During this patrol, Adroit transited through the 'hole in the wall' between the islands of Raragala and Guluwuru before returning to Darwin. During that time the vessel was manned by a spare crew under the command of Lieutenant CP Barr, RAN which responded to a search and rescue call from the trawler Captain AE Trivett. Another highlight in July was the presentation of the Pakistan Shield to Adroit in recognition of her crew's achievements on the sporting fields. In May a film crew joined Adroit to document the patrol work being undertaken by the Attack class focussing on the interception of illegal overseas fishing vessels within the declared fishing zones of Australia. The ship remained at Stirling until 19 April before making the return passage to Darwin. In late May Adroit was then used as a simulated target ship attacks! Following the successful interception, the vessel was escorted into Broome and handed over to the local authorities. She was subsequently towed back to Darwin for prosecution. On 21 March Adroit sailed for Darwin calling at Dampier for fuel along the way. On 10 September Adroit attended her first official function, the opening of the container terminal at Port Alma. The remainder of the year was spent alongside undergoing urgent maintenance. The month concluded with participation in a 'Squadex' with Assail, Aware and Bayonet before returning to Darwin.
